Curriculum and courses
Guide to choosing a major and preparing diploma theses
PPP courses take place live, usually every second Thursday and Friday,
during working hours from 08.15 – 14.45.
Attendance is compulsory.
Attendance is monitored by the teacher, with the right to be absent for 10% of the teaching time.
During the first semester, the courses are the same for all students:
FIRST SEMESTER
N/A |
| Credit units (ECTS) / teaching hours per semester | ||
1 | Occupational Health and Safety | 7.5 / 39
2 | Infrastructure of electrical distribution networks | 7.5 / 39
3 | Control and automation of intelligent electrical distribution networks | 7.5 / 39
4 | Electricity markets and regulatory issues | 7.5 / 39
total | 30.0 / 116 |
After the end of the first semester and up to one week after the start of the second semester, students must declare to the secretariat which of the two directions they wish to take.
The first orientation is more in line with the need for new network workers to acquire specialised knowledge and skills in modern distribution networks. It places more emphasis on the operation and management of the existing network (see the first two courses), while at the same time providing expertise in the application of the new data in the electricity network, which is the increased penetration of distributed generation units and storage units (batteries and electrification) (see the last two lessons).
The second orientation covers the need to develop the skills and knowledge of every engineer to be able to respond to the new requirements of the transformation towards an intelligent electricity network. It puts more emphasis on the future developments of dynamic pricing, demand management and microgrids (see lessons 2 and 3), but emphasises the importance of network simulation and studies in the future, as well as the specific security issues of critical infrastructures (from the reliability and security of physical infrastructures, e.g. substations, to cyber security).

THIRD SEMESTER
In the 3rd semester of the PPP, a postgraduate thesis is planned.
Before the end of the second semester of the course, students may choose a topic for their thesis in consultation with the supervising professor or lecturer of their choice. The Director of the PPP appoints the supervisor and sets up the examination board for the approval of the thesis, which consists of three members, one of whom is the supervisor. The thesis is examined on the supervisor’s proposal and the grade is determined by the three-member committee. All dissertations are written according to the dissertation standard published on the PPP website. The thesis language is Greek.
In the case of laboratory diploma theses that require tests or measurements in HEDNO or UOWM laboratories, the presence of the person in charge of each laboratory during the measurements and tests is MANDATORY, as well as the observance of all personal protection measures indicated by the person in charge and required in each case.
Awarding the best diplomas, extroversion and incentives to strengthen research
Evaluation of PPP
The theses of each semester will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee, taking into account a short presentation by each supervisor, according to the following criteria (a) the perspective of addressing an existing problem of the network, (b) the perspective of solving a future problem of the network, (c) the perspective of using the research for the development of network products, (d) the perspective of developing the work into a doctoral thesis. The three papers with the highest scores based on the above criteria will be awarded at a presentation day, with prizes to be decided by the Scientific Committee.
The PPP takes special measures to support and encourage research, to increase the number of scientific publications and to improve the recognition of the work of PPP executives and students (citations). Accordingly, for those diploma theses that lead to publications in peer-reviewed international conferences or to publications in international peer-reviewed journals of Q1-Q3 level (SCIMAGO ranking), the costs of the presentation at the conference or the costs of Open Access articles are covered.
PPP pays special attention to the recognition and dissemination of good practices from abroad or from Greece, with actions such as open meetings of the teaching staff and lecture-discussions by distinguished speakers from abroad and Greece for discussion and exchange of views. At the end of the lectures of each course or at any time during the semester, the lecturers or the students themselves are encouraged to request from PPP the organisation of lectures or workshops by distinguished speakers from Greece or abroad.
Evaluation of PPP
Both the HEDNO and the UOWM attach particular importance and weight to the evaluation of the PPP course, with the aim of making it an essential tool for the training of HEDNO staff (existing and future).
For this reason, the evaluation is carried out every six months, just before the end of the semester courses, by both the UOWM structures and the HEDNO.
The results of the evaluations end up in the PPP Scientific Committee, where they are compared with each other and then decisions are made on the appropriate corrective actions.
The evaluation therefore follows the following procedure:
Evaluation forms (anonymous questionnaires) from the HEDNO Education Department are filled in by students at the end of each course. They are processed by the HEDNO Directorate of Education.
At the end of each course, students also complete anonymous questionnaires from the Quality Assurance Unit (QAU) of the UOWM (https://qau.uowm.gr) electronically, using the codes of their institutional account with the UOWM.
They are processed by MODIP and access to the results is then given to each teacher and in total to the Internal Evaluation Group (EOEA) of the PPP. Due to the particular importance of the evaluation, the Scientific Committee of the PPP has been designated as the EOEA of the PPP.
Both the results of the HEDNO and the MODIP of the UOWM are sent to the OMEA-Scientific Committee of the PPP, which evaluates them at the end of each semester and makes recommendations: (a) for the award of the best teacher, (b) for the recommendations of the teacher(s) who are clearly below the average of the evaluations and proposals for their improvement, (c) for the non-renewal of the contracts of teachers who do not meet the requirements of the evaluations.
Periodic submission of the E.P.M.S. to external assessment and/or certification bodies, e.g. through the periodic external evaluation process.
